Sudoku Trivia
The Rubik's cube of the modern age, sudoku has taken the world by storm, but did you know... 1. Sudoku was created not in Japan as is popularly believed, but in America by a freelance puzzle creator called Howard Garnes. 2. Sudoku was originally published by Dell in their magazine called Dell Pencil and Paper Puzzles. It was released in 1979 under the name Number Place. 3. Sudoku didn't appear in Japan until 1984 when it was published in the Monthly Nikolist, a puzzle magazine by Nikoli and it was there where it became Sudoku and not Number Place. 4. Sudoku was named by the president of Nikoli who called it "sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru" - which translates roughly to "the numbers must remain single". It was later shortened to Sudoku which translates to "single number". 5. There are 6670903752021072936960 potentially different puzzle grids. Better sharpen that pencil, you've a long way to go before you complete them all! 6. The lowest number of pre-filled grids which can be solved by logic alone is said to be 17. Anything below that involves guesswork. 7. International individuals and teams compete in the World Sudoku Championship. The current champion (2007-2008)is Thomas Snyder from the USA. The next event will be held in Goa, Indian in April of 2008. 8. A recent survey claims Sudoku has been played by at least 167 million American - or just over half the adult population. 9. The world's first live sudoku gameshow - Sudoku Live - was shown on Sky 1 in July 2005 and featured 9 teams competing to complete puzzles. 10. A giant sudoku was carved onto a hill in the UK to promote the above TV show...it had almost 2,000 solutions. |
