Swap Books Online and Save Money

By Mark Falco

Any avid reader knows their hobby can become a pretty expensive way to pass the time, especially when you tend to buy more books than you will ever find the time to read.

We also know what happens to those old used books when we are done with them. Typically, we end up filling shelves or boxes full of them until the day we decide maybe it's time to make some room for new ones. Ultimately, that means selling them off on ebay for peanuts, donating them or trading them in at a used book store and getting very little back in return.

Thankfully, there is a better way and that comes in the form of online book trading communities and book swapping clubs!

All of the book sharing sites I will list at the end of this article are free to join and free to use. Some even give you free swap credits (that's free books for you) when you join them so they are well worth a few minutes of your time.

Book swapping clubs allow you to swap your books on a one for one basis with people from all over the world with no cost to you other than the postal cost of sending a book media mail to someone...which in the U.S. works out to be around $2 a time.

That is a great way to not only get some of those old books out of your house, but also to save money ($2 is better than $8+) and help stop the deforestation to which the publishing industry contributes.

In the U.S. alone, there were over 3 billion books sold in 2005 and that number keeps rising. That's a lot of trees! Think how many trees could be saved by engaging in book trading, swapping and sharing communities even if it is only for a small percentage of the books we all read.

Book trading sites are just like one enormous used book store except here, you are looking at a catalogue often stretching into the millions, rather than a couple of thousand at your largest local used book shop.

You will also trade books one-for-one as opposed to getting pennies or a discount on used books as most used book stores work.

Book swapping makes sense in all kinds of ways. Check out some of the sites listed below to find book exchanges serving your country.
